With Broken Wing Kenpo we aim to make improvements to your health and well-being by using unique techniques taught by our trained professional instructors. All classes are customized to fit each student's wants and needs. BWK will help you find the power to believe in our system, but most importantly, to believe in yourself.

Here at BWK, we constantly strive to provide our students with the best possible way of reaching their goals. With this philosophy, we have developed a program which incorporates multiple styles of martial arts in one form, called Broken Wing Kenpo. Applying multiple forms of martial arts enables us to adapt BWK to all students regardless of their level of ability.

What is Broken Wing Kenpo?

Broken Wing Kenpo was developed so that people with physical disabilities would have the opportunity to reap many benefits of martial arts. Our mission is to challenge and enhance our student's abilities. Our aim at Broken Wing Kenpo is to help our students body and mind to help overall health and well-being.

Broken Wing Kenpo is a style of martial arts based on Kenpo and has been designed specifically with the physically challenged in mind. According to a Shaolin Monk who was also a master of Kenpo, "Kenpo is the power of adaptability and yielding; the harmony of all things working together." It incorporates linear and circular movement to facilitate continuous motion as well as blending the dimensions of height, width, depth and time. It is based on logic; anticipating the moves of the opponent.

What We Aim To Achieve:

This combination of martial arts makes BWK a dynamic style that continually changes and grows with the student and the instructor. As with other styles of martial arts, it aims to challenge and enhance the student and is intended to provide the student with a challenging workout. The practice of this art helps improve both health and well-being. It lets the martial artist focus on their abilities, not their disabilities.

Cane Dao

What is Cane Dao?

Our Cane Dao system was developed in hand with BWK. An art form designed specifically around the cane. Individuals who take this course will learn how to properly use the cane for health and defensive purposes.

Defensive Tactical Strategies (DTS)

What is Defensive Tactical Strategies

The goal of DTS (Defensive Tactical Strategies) is to optimize your ability to defend yourself and those you love. To that end, DTS will provide you with the tools and guidance to effectively and realistically defend yourself when faced with threatening and dangerous situations. Focusing on the basics allows us to apply simple and effective techniques for a high chance of success. Defensive Tactical Strategies will provide you with practical and effective options to deal with them and improve your chance of a positive outcome. Using realistic settings and scenarios and working with our innovative instructors, the DTS system will help you develop simple and effective techniques to optimize your safety and the safety of those around you even in the most intense and difficult situations.

History:

Defensive Tactical Strategies (DTS) is a system based on Broken Wing Kenpo (BWK), a martial arts style designed for people of any body type and ability... or disability. BWK incorporates elements of Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and American martial arts.

Who are we?

The student does not fit the needs of the martial arts system, the system fits the needs of the student.

For years we have been teaching martial arts to people with physical challenges that range in severity from the deconditioned to brain injuries/stroke survivors. We have used that experience to develop Broken Wing Kenpo which focuses on helping people to achieve their goals and lead happier, healthier lives through martial arts. Each course was designed to help our students reach their full potential by providing them the proper tools to succeed.

We believe that the study of martial arts can bring a new challenge to our lives, strengthening our mind, body, and spirit. Our mission is to provide a high-quality martial arts education designed to maximize each student's abilities and talents. Our system, Broken Wing Kenpo, incorporates traditional values with progressive thinking, leading to a fluid comprehensive curriculum.

My goal has always been to bring martial arts to those with physical disabilities. Because of this dream, I have developed Broken Wing Kenpo which blends many styles of martial arts. This enables me to adapt the martial arts to students of any level of ability.

About

Shawn Withers, a certified instructor, holds a 4th-degree black belt in Broken Wing Kenpo and a 2nd-degree black belt in Shaolin Kenpo. He also holds a black belt in O-Ki-Tao and is rank sifu in Taiji Qigong from master Chris Keith. Shawn has also received the rank of canemaster from Grandmaster Mark Shuey.

Sensei Withers is a personal safety consultant who has worked with a variety of students, both disabled and non-disabled. He has extensive experience working with all students, making him a pioneer in the field of teaching martial arts to the physically challenged.



John Pratt

Consultant & Instructor

John Pratt is a personal safety consultant who is the originator and creator of DTS, Defensive Tactical Strategy Program. He has a 3rd degree Black Belt in BWK (Broken Wing Kenpo) and a Black Belt in Cane Dao.

About

John Pratt, originally from Fairfield Maine, John has studied therapeutic recreation at the University Of Southern Maine. For the last decade, John has been working in healthcare as a direct support professional for individuals who are disabled. Alongside his work as a support professional, John has been teaching martial arts to individuals from all walks of life. He has a passion for teaching not only for self-defense but for the benefits of the pursuit of health and well-being.
